S Reed Shimamoto, MD, FAAP
Dr S. Reed Shimamoto grew up in Montana and Colorado. He obtained his medical degree from the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center, in Denver, CO. He completed his Pediatric Residency at St. Joseph’s Hospital and Medical Center in Phoenix, AZ from 1997 to 2000 and served as Chief Resident 2000-2001. Along with Dr. Jain he then completed his Allergy & Immunology fellowship at National Jewish Health Center and University of Colorado School of Medicine in Denver from 2001 to 2003, Colorado where he was Chief Fellow and a member of the Medical Staff between 2002-2003. Dr. Shimamoto founded San Tan Allergy & Asthma in 2005, and has been featured in Phoenix Magazine’s “Top Docs” issues. He is currently a member of the American College of Allergy and Immunology, the American Academy of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology, The American Academy of Pediatrics and is Board Certified in Allergy & Immunology and Pediatrics. Dr. Shimamoto has lectured on asthma, allergies, anaphylaxis, food allergy and eosinophilic diseases at local and national programs. He is currently accepting new pediatric and adult patients. Dr. Shimamoto lives in Gilbert with his wife and daughters and enjoys responsible marine fish/reef keeping, gardening, swimming and cooking.
Neal Jain, MD, FAAP, FAAAAI
Dr Neal Jain is an Arizona native. He obtained his medical degree from the Medical College of Wisconsin and subsequently trained in Pediatrics at Phoenix Children’s Hospital where he served as a chief resident during 2001-2002. Both he and Dr. Shimamoto trained in Allergy, Asthma and Immunology at National Jewish Health Center and University of Colorado School of Medicine in Denver, Colorado. Dr. Jain was appointed Chief Fellow at National Jewish Health Center and was a member of the Medical Staff between 2003-2004. Prior to joining San Tan Allergy & Asthma in January 2010 , he practiced as an Allergist/Immunologist at Dean Health System in Madison, Wisconsin. Dr. Jain was also on faculty as a Professor of Medicine at the University of Wisconsin in the division of Allergy, Pulmonary, and Critical Care Medicine, where he supervised fellows in training. He has been an active member of the community serving as Medical Director for the Food Allergy Association of Wisconsin, Chair of The Wisconsin Asthma Coalition and on the Board of Directors for the National Eczema Association. Dr. Jain is President of the Arizona Allergy Society, a fellow of the American Academy of Allergy, Asthma, & Immunology and of the American Academy of Pediatrics. He is board certified by the American Board of Allergy & Immunology and Pediatrics. Dr. Jain is currently a regular contributing writer of the “House Call” segment for the magazine Living Without (http://www.livingwithout.com/) and has also been featured on a nationally syndicated television program to discuss new asthma technologies. He has authored or co-authored a number of studies published in peer-reviewed journals and continues to pursue clinical research. Dr. Jain is currently accepting new pediatric and adult patients. Outside of his professional responsibilities, Dr. Jain enjoys spending time with his family, playing doubles sand volleyball, and cooking.
Dr. Jennifer Hill, MD
Dr. Jennifer Hill grew up in Mesa, Arizona. She graduated Magna Cum Laude from Arizona State University where she received a Bachelors of Science in Psychology. She then attended medical school at the University of Arizona College of Medicine in Tucson. While at the University of Arizona, Dr. Hill was inducted into the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society and graduated with honors. Thereafter, she remained in Tucson to complete her Internal Medicine residency at Banner University Medical Center. During residency she received several awards including “Intern of the Year” and “Outstanding Resident in Allergy, Immunology, Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine.” In addition, she was recognized for her leadership and dedication to research with the “Resident Research Distinction Award” and the “Graduate Medical Education Resident Excellence and Leadership Scholarship.” She served as chief resident and clinical instructor from 2014 – 2015. Like Drs. Shimamoto and Jain, Dr. Hill completed her Allergy & Immunology fellowship at National Jewish Health and University of Colorado School of Medicine in Denver, Colorado. Dr. Hill has published articles in peer reviewed academic journals, has authored a book chapter on aspirin exacerbated respiratory disease, and has co-authored several research studies. In addition, she has presented on various Allergy and Immunology topics at national and local conferences. She continues to have a strong interest in clinical research.
Dr. Hill is a diplomat of the American Board of Internal Medicine and is board certified by the American Board of Allergy & Immunology. She is a member of the American College of Allergy, Asthma, and Immunology; the American Academy of Allergy, Asthma, and Immunology; and the American College of Physicians. She is currently accepting new pediatric and adult patients. Dr. Hill and her husband, Dr. Benjamin Pate, are the proud parents of two wonderful children. In her spare time, she enjoys bike rides and hiking with her family, cooking, reading, dining out and traveling.
Heidi Schmidt, PA-C
Heidi was born and raised in Arizona and has been able to explore most of the state during her time here. She grew up in Tucson and lived there until she was 17 years old and then moved up to Flagstaff to attend Northern Arizona University where she received her Bachelor’s Degree in Microbiology with minors in Chemistry and Psychology in 2006. While attending undergraduate school at NAU she was involved in a lot of community projects through AmeriCorps and jobs to help serve the people in her community. She was selected for the Gold Axe Award, participated in undergraduate Microbiology Research and was a member of Tri-Beta National Biological Honors Society and the Ambassadors of the College of Engineering and Natural Sciences (ACENS). She then went on to work for the American Red Cross as a Phlebotomist and then as a Research Technician at Midwestern University before pursuing her goal of becoming a Physician Assistant. She received her Masters of Medical Science in Physician Assistant Studies with a Bioethics Emphasis from Midwestern University in Glendale, Arizona in 2010 and spent the first 5 years of her career working in Family Medicine before making the decision to grow her knowledge in the field of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology and join our team at San Tan Allergy & Asthma this year. Heidi is a nationally board certified physician assistant, a fellow member of the American Academy of Physician Assistants and currently has memberships with the Arizona Allergy and Asthma Society and the American Academy of Physician Assistants in Allergy, Asthma and Immunology. In her free time she loves to play and coach soccer, compete in triathlons/duathlons and runs, along with going to football games and other sporting events or concerts with her husband, friends and family. She also loves spending time with her 2 dogs, Alli and Tres.
Jim Baker, PA-C
Jim grew up in the Syracuse, NY area and received a Bachelor of Arts degree in biology from the State University of New York (SUNY) at Potsdam. He then started a career in the pharmaceutical manufacturing industry working in microbiology laboratories, and eventually progressed into laboratory management. After several years, he moved to Albuquerque, NM and continued his pharmaceutical career there. In time, he took his experience into the field to provide consulting services to a number of pharmaceutical and cosmetics companies. Although this career was challenging and fulfilling, he decided to get closer to the patients he indirectly served in the pharmaceutical industry, and was fortunate to be accepted into the University of New Mexico’s Physician Assistant program. He graduated from this program with a Master of Science degree in Physician Assistant Studies and was awarded the Student Award for Professionalism at graduation. He and his family moved to Arizona in 2016, and he is grateful to serve the patients who trust him with their care at San Tan Allergy & Asthma.
He has been married since the year 2000, and has two young boys he enjoys very much. Jim also enjoys practicing martial arts, traveling, and a good meal with family and friends
John Gedell, PA-C
John grew up on Long Island, New York. He attended Stony Brook University in New York and graduated in 2010 with a degree in Biology and minor in Women’s Studies. After obtaining his undergraduate degree, he enrolled in the physician assistant program at Touro College in New York and graduated with his Master of Physician Assistant Studies degree in 2012.
Upon graduation, John served in the United States Air Force as a Physician Assistant in Family Medicine at Vandenberg Air Force Base in Lompoc, California for 4 years. After serving his tenure in the Air Force, he decided to move to Arizona and joined San Tan Allergy & Asthma as a Physician Assistant in August 2016. John’s interests outside of work include genealogy, travelling, and staying active.
Carly Hopkins, PA-C
Carly Hopkins was born and raised in Mesa, Arizona. She graduated Cum Laude from Arizona State University where she received a Bachelor of Science in Psychology in 2009. Prior to attending PA school she worked in inpatient and outpatient radiology settings. She also spent a month in Tanzania, Africa on a medical mission to serve pediatric patients in that region. She then attended PA school at AT Still University and graduated with distinction in 2013. During PA school she was involved in several community outreach and volunteer events providing medical care to those who didn’t otherwise have access to it. After graduating PA school she spent 4 years practicing Internal Medicine in Chandler AZ. In 2017 she decided to expand her career in the field of Asthma, Allergy and Immunology and joined our team at San Tan Allergy and Asthma. Carly is a nationally board certified physician assistant, a member of the American Academy of Physician Assistants as well as the Arizona State Association of Physician Assistants. She currently also has memberships with the Arizona Allergy and Asthma Society and the American Academy of Physician Assistants in Allergy, Asthma and Immunology.Carly is married and has a 2 year old son. She enjoys spending time with family, camping, playing volleyball and traveling.
