What Is Eczema?
Learn More About Atopic Dermatitis
Causes
Eczema is thought to be driven by a combination of genetic predisposition and environmental factors. Common triggers include irritants such as harsh soaps and detergents, allergens like dust mites and certain foods, fluctuations in weather conditions—especially dry and cold climates—and stress, which can exacerbate symptoms. Skin infections can also play a role in the severity of the condition.
Symptoms
The primary symptoms of eczema include intense itching, red or brownish-gray patches, small, raised bumps that may leak fluid when scratched, thickened, cracked, or scaly skin, and raw, sensitive, swollen skin from scratching. These symptoms typically appear on the face, back of the knees, wrists, hands, or feet.
Treatement
The treatment for eczema is necessary to heal the affected skin and prevent flare-ups of symptoms. This is often done through moisturizers to maintain skin hydration, corticosteroid creams to control itching and repair the skin, and medications to fight infection. Phototherapy and newer biological drugs are other options for severe cases.
What Are The First Signs Of Eczema?
Eczema is connected to impaired skin barrier function, which means that the skin cannot effectively retain moisture. Early signs to look for are dry, sensitive skin; red, inflamed skin; bad itching; and dark colored patches of skin. Moreover, symptoms of eczema vary by age. In infants under two years old, it commonly appears as a red, itchy rash on the cheeks, chin, chest, or scalp. In older children, rashes typically develop in the creases of elbows and the backs of knees, as well as on the neck, ankles, and wrists. In adults, rashes appear in these same places but can also cover much of the body; they may particularly affect the neck, face, and area around the eyes
Dry Skin
One of the earliest signs of eczema is usually a dry, rough patch of skin that often becomes itchy. This symptom is a precursor to more specific eczema signs that can cause more discomfort.
Sensitive Skin
Another sign is sensitive skin, especially if it reacts adversely to ordinary exposure to soaps, detergents, or other common irritants. This sensibility can worsen over time if the skin is exposed to the allergens for many days.
Red Skin
Eczema may start as small areas of red, inflamed skin that can spread or become more intense, depending on exposure to triggers. Keep in mind that red skin is the consequence of inflammation.
Inflamed Skin
Inflammation is a common early sign of eczema, with affected areas becoming red, swollen, and painful to touch. If your skin looks swollen, red, and dry, then talk to one of our doctors as you may be experiencing eczema.
Bad Itching
Severe itching is characteristic of eczema and often precedes the visible outbreak of skin lesions. It’s usually the symptom that prompts sufferers to seek treatment, as it’s extremely uncomfortable and sometimes it can lead to painful wounds.
Dark Color Patches On Skin
Dark, discolored patches of skin are common as eczema progresses, particularly in people with naturally darker skin. These patches may become permanent if the skin is frequently scratched or damaged.
