An In-Depth Look At Your Sinus Infection

Sinus infections and other illnesses seem to have a knack of appearing at the worst times possible, right when the Chandler allergy doctors’ offices are closed for a long weekend, or over the holidays. You may think you are just facing typical allergies, a simple cold, or a sinus infection, but how can you tell when it is really time to get to a doctor for some relief? The allergists at San Tan Allergy & Asthma have offered an in-depth look at sinus infections and how to understand them better.

What Are Sinuses?

In order to clearly understand sinus infections and their types, it is important to know what sinuses are and how they normally function. Basically, sinuses are a connected system of air-filled, hollow cavities in your skull. They are located behind the bones of your upper face, cheeks, nose, and forehead, and range in size from an inch diameter to much smaller.

The sinuses are lined with a very thin, pink layer of tissue called mucosa that is covered with tiny surface hairs called cilia. Cells within the lining produce mucus, which is designed specifically to trap any germs or pollutants that are breathed in. Once germs get trapped in the mucus, the cilia will push that polluted mucus out of the sinuses into the nose to be blown out by the person.

What Is a Sinus Infection?

A sinus infection and sinus inflammation (known as sinusitis) can occur for a few reasons. When the sinuses become inflamed or infected, the mucus gets very thick and can clog up the sinus cavities. This causes intense pressure, pain, and headaches. Additionally, bacteria can become trapped inside the sinus cavity from the thick mucus, thus causing a sinus infection.

There are two main types of sinusitis, chronic and acute. Chronic inflammation occurs when the sinusitis is long-lasting or frequently recurring. Acute sinusitis, or a sinus infection, is when the inflammation lasts just a few weeks and only happens three or fewer times in a year. This kind is usually caused by a viral infection, Mesa allergies, exposure to smoke or other air pollution, nasal polyps, and even a dental infection.

What Are the Different Kinds of Sinus Infections?

The good news about acute sinusitis, especially when caused by a seasonal allergy, is that it usually resolves fairly quickly on its own without needing intervention by a Mesa allergy expert. Unfortunately, chronic sinusitis is a more serious issue and will need further testing and evaluation by an asthma doctor or Mesa allergy doctor.

Symptoms are fairly similar for both acute and chronic types, so the best way to determine which type you are dealing with is by getting an allergy test, doing Chandler asthma testing, or meeting with an ear/nose/throat specialist to get some answers. Typically, the length of infection time coupled with the frequency of infection and difficulty of treatment are the most distinguishing factors that allow a doctor to provide Chandler allergy relief to the person suffering. Doctors will also investigate outlying factors such as your immune system strength, family history, and personal history of complicated or difficult infections. Once your doctor can weigh all the contributing factors, they will be able to create a comprehensive treatment plan that is unique to your body and your needs.
